Good Life Journal - Mark 12
Mark 5:29-31 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
Jesus tells us from Deuteronomy 6:4-5 when answering the teachers of religious law that there is only one true God. We are then commanded to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. The second and equally important commandment from Leviticus 19:18 is love your neighbor as yourself. While loving God deals with our personal relationship to God and loving others corresponds to how we treat humanity, Jesus links the two commandments in the end of verse 31.
God created each and every one of us to love Him. The first priority I must have is to recognize that there is only one true God and he is the Lord of my life. As such, He is deserving of all my love, worship and praise. I must be careful to guard that no other god(s) take His place in my attention and affection. If I allow work, hobbies to take precedence over God, things become askew and before I know it, life is out of balance. Out of my love to God who loved us first when he did not have to by sending Jesus to the cross on our behalf, we are to be Spirit led and share that love with all of our neighbors. The two commandments are independent but are not mutually exclusive and are associated as one. How would it work if I loved God but had disdain for my neighbors? Conversely, if I loved my neighbors but did not love God I don’t have a relationship with my creator- big problem. The answer is in the redeeming blood of Jesus on the cross at Calvary who died for our sins and on the third day was resurrected to defeat death.
Please help me recognize you not only as the one true God, but also as Lord of my life. Let me be Spirit led to receive your love and from that, share your love with all my neighbors so they can see you through me.
